Outright gifts offer immediate benefits

Beyond planned giving to CSU that involves trusts, estates and bequests, most donations to CSU are one-time contributions or a series of such gifts, including those that thousands make each year to the university's Annual Fund. Here are a few categories of outright gifts and details that might prove useful.

Cash or check: CSU will gladly accept cash gifts, but we do not recommend mailing cash or sending it via courier. Bring cash directly to Richards Hall 112 during regular business hours, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. most weekdays.

Checks should be made out to the CSU Foundation and mailed along with this form to:
Columbus State University Foundation
4225 University Ave.
Columbus, Ga. 31907

The check's memo line can be used to designate a gift. Unrestricted gifts go to meet the most urgent needs. To make a memorial or honorary gift by cash or check, attach a note that includes the name of the honoree or the person to be remembered, plus the contact name and address (family, for memorials). CSU will notify the individual or deceased's family of your gift.

Credit or debit card: CSU's new secure online e-giving Web site makes it possible to make credit card donations quickly, plus the site keeps a record of gifts from registered users. You may also call or fax the information for such a gift. CSU needs your name, the name printed on the card, the card number, expiration date and the amount of your donation. Gifts may be designated. Call such donations in to 706-562-1591 or fax them to 706-562-1592. Mail details for such donations to:
University Advancement
Columbus State University
4225 University Ave.
Columbus, GA 31907

CSU takes seriously the responsibility of handling sensitive personal financial information, limits access to such information and doesn't routinely store credit card information on campus computers.

Payroll deduction: CSU employees may make contributions via payroll deduction, either monthly or biweekly, depending on your payroll cycle. Deductions for Annual Fund pledges begin in January and may last for any term up to a year.

Property: CSU gladly accepts gifts of tangible personal property that the university would otherwise need to purchase. Some donations may have to be approved by a subcommittee of the CSU Foundation's Board of Trustees. Gifts that do not require prior approval include televisions, stereos and computer hardware. If you are interested in donating any item to CSU, call Kayron Laska, vice president for University Advancement, at 706-568-2487. To donate real estate, call University Advancement at 706-565-3640.

Stocks or securities: Electronic transfer is the most popular and efficient way to transfer securities to CSU. If this is done through a free delivery, CSU gets 100 percent of the value of the transfer. If a broker holds the stock, notify the broker that you wish to make a gift of securities to the CSU Foundation. Your broker will then need written authorization before they can make the transfer. The broker will need to know the name of the stock to transfer, the number of shares and if the gift is designated for any particular program.

Ask your broker to contact University Advancement at 706-568-2487 or 706-568-2114 after you have authorized the transfer, and our office will detail transfer instructions.

Stock certificates may also be delivered by mail or hand to:
University Advancement
Richards Hall 136
4225 University Avenue
Columbus, GA 31907

Please do not mail endorsed certificates. Once the certificate is endorsed, it is legal tender and may be exchanged by anyone. For more information on the valuation of stocks and bonds or gift crediting, please contact University Advancement at 706-568-2114.

Matching gifts: It's possible for CSU to double or even triple your donation if your employer offers a matching gift program. Some require forms to be completed by the employee; others have automated programs that may only require a phone call. Most corporations have guidelines that non-profit organizations must meet before a donation can be matched. Check with your company's Human Resources Department for more information. Mail your form, along with your contribution to University Advancement at the above address.
